December College Admissions Tasks

As the holiday season approaches, December is the perfect time to take small, meaningful steps toward college readiness. No matter your grade level, there's something you can do this month to set yourself up for future success.

To begin with, we are offering two upcoming free webinars (grab a ticket and I will send you the slides and recording) that will be super helpful for 9th, 10th, and 11th graders:

Some additional items to consider here:

Freshmen (9th Grade): Laying the Foundation

  • Explore Your Interests: Use your winter break to try new hobbies, read about careers, or explore online courses in areas that intrigue you.

  • Build Strong Habits: Focus on excelling in your classes. If you're struggling in a subject, reach out for help. Good grades start with good habits.

  • Get Involved: Join a club or start volunteering. Colleges love to see consistent, meaningful extracurricular involvement.

Sophomores (10th Grade): Begin to Strategize

  • Think About Your Future Classes: Consider advanced or AP courses for next year to show colleges you're challenging yourself academically.

  • Start a Resume: Track your activities, awards, and volunteer work. A resume will help you later with applications and recommendations.

  • Prep for Standardized Tests: Try practice questions for the PSAT or SAT/ACT to familiarize yourself with the format.

Juniors (11th Grade): It's Crunch Time!

  • Research Colleges: Use your break to create a list of schools. Think about size, location, majors, and extracurricular opportunities.

  • Plan Your Spring Tests: Register for the SAT or ACT if you haven't already. Consider taking them in the spring.

  • Build Relationships: Connect with teachers who might write your recommendation letters. Keep them updated on your achievements.

  • Work on Your Resume: Include jobs, internships, or leadership positions from the year.

Bonus Tips for Everyone:

  1. Explore Scholarships: Many opportunities are open to underclassmen!

  2. Volunteer Together: Look for family-friendly service opportunities during the holiday season. It's a great way to bond and build your resume.

  3. Stay Curious: Keep reading, learning, and growing outside the classroom.
