Thoughts on College Admissions from the World Cup

As I've been watching the World Cup, I've been struck by how much it reminds me of college admissions.

Every nation arrives with hope. Some have generations of history and expectations behind them. Others are underdogs with incredible talent but less recognition. Every team has worked tirelessly to get there, yet only one will ultimately lift the trophy.

Along the way, the margins are razor-thin. A fortunate bounce, an unlucky draw, a questionable call, or simply facing the wrong opponent at the wrong time can change everything. The best team doesn't always win, and a team's final placement doesn't necessarily reflect the quality of its players or coaches.

College admissions works much the same way.

Students spend years preparing: taking challenging classes, pursuing activities they love, serving their communities, and growing as people. But when applications reach highly selective colleges, there are often far more qualified applicants than available spots. Decisions can hinge on institutional priorities, geographic balance, intended majors, or factors entirely outside a student's control.

The lesson from the World Cup isn't that preparation doesn't matter. It matters immensely. Teams earn the opportunity to compete because of years of disciplined effort.

The lesson is that outcomes don't tell the whole story.

No one watches a talented team eliminated in the quarterfinals and concludes that the players failed or that their years of training were wasted. We recognize their excellence, appreciate their journey, and know they'll continue to succeed in other arenas.

Our students deserve the same perspective.

As parents, one of the greatest gifts we can give is helping our children understand that their worth is not determined by the name on an acceptance letter. Their character, resilience, curiosity, kindness, and willingness to embrace opportunities will shape their futures far more than any admissions decision.

The goal isn't simply to get into a particular college. The goal is to become the kind of person who thrives wherever they go.

Just as every World Cup produces remarkable stories from unexpected places, every admissions season reveals students who flourish at institutions they may not have initially imagined. Success is built over time, not awarded in a single moment.

So as we cheer for teams chasing their dreams this summer, let's remember to celebrate our own students for the effort they've invested, the people they're becoming, and the many paths that can lead to extraordinary futures.
