What to Do If You've Been Deferred or Waitlisted.

A letter of continued interest (LOCI) is a tool that students use to express their ongoing commitment to a college after they have been deferred from early decision or waitlisted from regular admission. Here is a guide to writing an effective LOCI:

  1. Start with a formal salutation: Address the letter to the Admissions Committee or a specific member of the admissions team.

  2. Reiterate your interest: State your continued interest in the college and why you believe it is the right fit for you. Highlight any new achievements or developments in your life that make you an even stronger candidate.

  3. Update your credentials: Provide updated information about your academic performance, extracurricular activities, and any new honors or awards you have received since you applied.

  4. Demonstrate your fit: Show how your interests and values align with those of the college. Explain why the college’s academic programs, student life, and campus culture appeal to you.

  5. Show your research: Demonstrate your knowledge of the college and its programs by discussing specific courses, professors, clubs, and events that interest you.

  6. Express gratitude: Express appreciation for the opportunity to apply and for the time and effort the admissions team has taken to review your application.

  7. Keep it concise: LOCIs should be no more than one page long, so be concise and to the point.

  8. Proofread and edit: Proofread your letter carefully for grammatical errors and typos. Make sure it is well-organized and easy to read.

  9. End with a polite close: End your letter with a polite closing such as “Sincerely” or “Best regards”, followed by your full name and contact information.

Writing a letter of continued interest can help you stand out among other applicants and express your passion for the college. By following these tips, you can create a compelling and effective LOCI that will help you reach your goal of attending your dream school.
